Giant Rats Found in East Timor

We all know that rats can get really big, particularly when they eat "quality" garbage left by humans. Yet, city people have never seen the giant rats found in East Timor. Africa was thought to be the home of large rats, but this is not the case.

No less that seven new species of large rats have been observed in East Timor. If you can image one 10 times larger than your "domestic" beast, you are getting close to the mark. The giants weigh about 5 kilograms.

There is evidence that ancient man actually ate the rats on Timor as far back as 50,000 years ago. This was before tools were introduced from Asia. It seems that they were hunted then thrown onto the fire to cook because there were no cooking pots.

The study aims to find out what animals were like before humans arrived there from Southeast Asia. Were they large then? It is known that mammals actually get smaller when isolated on an island.

Ninety three percent of Australians support the adoption of marijuana for medical use. This is despite the fact that no trial has shown any pain relieving properties in the drug whatsoever. So we are going to relax the driving laws to allow people under the influence to drive - not bloody likely!

Can you imagine a guest at a party making a fool of himself while taking marijuana with others powerless to do anything about it? Sure, the drug makes you relaxed and dopey, but that is no excuse to force it on passersby.

It is not the genuine patients with cancer, Parkinson's disease, or glaucoma that may benefit from its improved well being properties, what we have to be careful of is doctor shoppers who go around pestering GPs to write scripts, like the current situation for opiates.

The government is planning to legalized marijuana for medical use. let us hope that tough safeguards are in place to block access to those in the general public who are only after a quick high.

Volvo Protects Cars From Kangaroos

Though the protected bars on the front of rural vehicles is called a bull bar, it was originally designed to stop damage from hitting a kangaroo. These animals are as common as muck in Australia. Indeed, they are a native pest if ever there was one. Countless kangaroos invade farms all the time eating grass meant for food animals and drinking water pumped out of the ground.

It is unusual for a driver to hit a wandering cow. Because they are valuable they are generally safely penned in. On the other hand, kangaroos wander freely. Volvo Australia is studying kangaroo behavior on the roadside. They intend to fit a radar sensor to cars that will scan the road ahead. When a kangaroo is detected directly ahead within contact range the brakes will be automatically applied to a vehicle.

If Volvo is successful it will dramatically reduce insurance costs. Over 20,000 kangaroos are hit annually in Australia. It is like hitting a brick wall. Some vehicles are written off; there is so much damage.

Alpacas Australian Made

Alpacas rule. Okay, they don't really but they are going strong in Australia. Farmers here say they are the best in world. This may be a tall "call". However, alpacas are cuddly, cute and low maintenance. They also provide a nice income.

The first were brought to Australia 25 years ago, so growing them is a relatively new industry. Farmers are doing well because animals originally imported were genetically superior. This has resulted in high overseas demand for access to the gene pool.

Most breeders in Australia are small, having only a few dozen alpacas on average. Farmers have no trouble selling the fleece. The market is growing. The future looks good for alpaca meat.

The animals do not damage the land. Indeed, they all poo in one spot. As there is no centralized fleece processing body at present, individual farmers process fleece themselves. All unprocessed fleece has been pre-booked until Christmas for processing by "renters", as they are called.

Kangaroos Fart a Lot

Kangaroos are very windy. That is they fart a lot. Australian scientists have been in the field so to speak studying this. Climate change is the driving force for this study. The search to reduce greenhouse emissions from farm animals is also a driving factor.

Unlike cows which produce large amounts of methane gas, kangaroos are relatively methane free. Kangaroos graze like cows. Indeed, if fresh grass is available their diet is much the same. It was thought that the mix of micro-organisms in their stomachs stops production of methane.

Western grey kangaroos and reds were kept in comfy Chambers where their ins-and-outs were studied. It was not the micro-organisms in the gut that reduced methane. Food passes through their digestion in a unique way. Unfortunately, just how this works has not been elaborated upon yet by scientists.
