In the West, surgery will continue to be the best option. Expensive surgery is for the most part not available in developing countries. The new eye drops will have most impact on these nations when it is eventually perfected.

Diseases From the Past, Return

It seems diseases that were thought to be long gone are reappearing. The medical community are not prepared for this and do not know how to respond. Scarlet fever is being communicated again from person to person.
Baby with scarlet fever
Oddly, this is in the UK and countries in Asia. China is the hotspot with 100,000 cases. Hong Kong has had 5,000. The UK reported 12,000 instances of infection.

Scarlet fever is a childhood disease. Symptoms include a very sore throat, skin rash, headache and vomiting. Antibiotics are the favored treatment. However, bacterial resistance to antibiotics is an issue. The great "fall-back", penicillin, is the most effective. Fears are that it will not work as its use continues.

Un-Accredited Chinese Herbalists to Work in Australia

Chinese herbs treatment
The trade deal between Australia and China is off to a bad start. Australia becomes an open market for quack traditional Chinese medicine. China is already responsible for the demise of African animals because of superstitious beliefs about curative properties of ordinary parts of animal bodies.

Australia has not even policed homeopathy properly. Constituents are diluted into insignificance where they cannot possibly have any effect. They are harmless at best. Homeopaths live well on treatment based on a mythical foundation.

Under the agreement between China and Australia Chinese herbalists will be allowed to register and set up shop in Australia without any accreditation. They will come in their tens of thousands to partake of a lucrative market of stupid people.

I was once visiting an Australian doctor of Chinese origin who was filling-in for the regular GP. He was giving me acupuncture treatment as advised by my GP and he said, "You don't believe in this baloney do you?"

It seems odd to me that as most Westerners drop old beliefs the demand for alternative medicine is actually increasing. Alternative therapists boldly claim that science has proved their treatment to be valid. This is incorrect. Regulated tests show no benefits whatsoever! Their claims are mere hearsay. This is another legacy of Tony Abbott - sign everything to do with the free market and sod the voters. Ah well, he will get his further down the track.

Ancient Potions Work!

If your current collection of medications to fight disease no longer works, look to the past. That is what scientists are doing. They are reading through books hundreds of years old on "home" remedies.
Ancient potions book manuscript
A medieval book mentions a substance that has shown promise in destroying methicillin resistant "staphylococcus aureus" (MRSA), a damaging infection common in hospitals. The potion was used a thousand years ago in Viking times.

Notably, the "cure" was used to treat a simple stye, a common eye complaint in that era. The concoction was found in a book called Bald's Leechbook. Though the title is rather off putting there is a lot of truth in it.

Work is gathering apace with the formation of the AncientBiotics Project. This was the first attempt at testing an ancient remedy. The future looks promising based on this positive finding.

Apparently, medieval medicine was not all quackery. Though misguided by blood letting many of the potions were functioning treatments.

Saccharin to Treat Cancer

Are you sweet enough? Maybe you are if you use saccharin. But wait! Are there other uses that this comforter can be used for? Scientists believe that it could treat cancer. The saccharin molecule deactivates carbonic anhydrase IX, a protein in aggressive cancers.
Sweet saccharin to treat aggressive cancers
Carbonic anydrase IX regulates PH so that cancer can more easily spread through the body. It is hoped that saccharin can change the PH level. If it is not at an optimum level the cancer can be successfully treated with radiation and chemo therapy.

Healthy tissues, except for the gastrointestinal tract, have no carbonydrase anydrose IX. Other carbonic anydrase proteins are there though. Molecules tested before blocked similar carbonic anydrase proteins which are present to make the body work. By tweaking the saccharin molecule it was discovered that it does not affect helpful anhydrase proteins.

Tests have begun on liver and breast cancer. These are currently on animals. If the research is successful work on humans will open a new road to treating aggressive cancers.

British Doctors Living in Australia Not Tempted Home

The call for British born doctors to return "home" to England because the country is short of GPs will fall on deaf ears. Medical professionals have moved to Australia for higher income, better lifestyle and great weather.

If the UK wants to keep its doctors it will have to pay them more and make sure there housing is top class. Central heating is a must-have in England. I used to live there and for 365 days a year my feet were cold despite wearing fur-lined boots. The Australian sun is the driving force for people moving here. The cold country cannot offer this.

Career breaks for British doctors invariably turn into permanent relocation to a healthier outdoor lifestyle. The only thing that can make immigrants change their mind is a massive increase in income and the British government is not offering much. Talk is cheap and it will not convince ex-patriots. A recruitment drive must offer something significant. Otherwise it will be a waste of money.

Doctors not tempted
There is a plus for Britain: both countries have prime ministers of similar ilk. Both are taking money out of health.  The health sectors in these countries are in a bad way and in decline. Ten million pounds is far to low for a recruitment scheme. However, resident doctors will not accept extra income being paid "only" to overseas medical practitioners to temp them back to Britain.

Stipulating that these doctors have to work in areas where doctors are short to get the money is a barrier. We have the same problem in Australia. Rural doctors get the same government rebate as city doctors in Australia. Convincing GPs to live in the bush is like hitting them with a feather duster.

Hope for Ebola Vaccine

Ebola is still a world crisis. Though the overall rate of infected people has slowed, some pockets in Africa have increased infections. It could still spread to Europe, Asia and the US.  If it does spread this wide, control will be virtually impossible.
Some form of effective treatment has to be found - fast. The blood of survivors has been seen has the most probable source of a vaccine. However, any form of treatment should be examined for its usefulness.

In Australia a vaccine tested on monkeys holds out great hope. The Kunjin treatment has been created from engineering the Ebola virus protein. Monkeys were given the vaccine and they showed significant protection from the disease. Seventy five per cent of the monkeys kept their resistance.

Much research was based on tests on rodents. Success on them did not mean that vaccines would work on humans, so tests on primates is beginning. Scientists must get a move on to create a successful vaccine. Ninety per cent of infected people die.

Ultrasound to Treat Alzheimer's Disease

A great deal of research is going on into solving the problem of Alzheimer's disease. It is a major issue with the number of elderly people increasing in most countries. Though young people can suffer from the illness it is perceived as a disease of the aged.
Ultrasound to treat Alzheimers disease
While most work has been done on the chemical and molecular structure of the brain, it seems that a simple treatment has been there all along. The University of Queensland has stumbled onto ultrasound as an effective treatment. First successful on mice, it is now being rolled out for humans.

Waves of ultrasound break up neurotoxic amyloid plaque. The cause of the illness is still there, but the damage done is reversed. Some old memories could still be lost. However, new ones will be kept. This will reduce the need for resources in caring for the elderly who will able to function on their own.

In tests, mice were capable of solving problems that had beaten them before. Decision making is the most important function of the human brain apart from those keeping a person alive. Long term memories are not so critical: though ideally, one would not want to loose these.

It is debated whether the use of ultrasound would improve executive functions of healthy brains. Other diseases also damage the brain and detection of them is difficult. In the future we could all be getting regular ultrasound.

Homeopathy Claims by Firm are False

Let's face it - homeopathy is hogwash. How can a "medication" work if it is diluted into nothingness? Dilution of the main ingredients in homeopathic remedies is in the millions of particles to the base carrying substance. All cures are hearsay, with no scientific proof whatsoever.

Homeopathy Plus claimed that the whooping cough vaccine didn't work, but its homeopathic treatment was a substitute that did the job. This of course was all lies. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has taken the company to court on the grounds that the claims are misleading and deceptive.

The firm also made claims about cures for meningococcal disease, Japanese encephalitis, malaria and dengue fever. All these claims are mythical. Protests came from the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration ordering the claims be taken down.  Homeopathy Plus ignored this.

More than a year after the advertising program has been completed a court has found in favor of the ACCC. The homeopathy company will not get away absolutely free. Penalties will be decided in February.

Australian Scientists Reverse Aging

Australian scientists attempt to understand the aging process. In a partnership with Harvard University, the University of New South Wales has found a way to stop aging. Though it has been achieved on mice it has already been applied to humans.

Young youthful genes are turned on while older ones are turned off. Done in the right way, the process can halt and even reverse aging. The triggers are naturally occurring molecules and proteins. Change is made in the muscles and improvement begins in a week.

Hopefully, drugs containing the triggers can be developed. At least this is what the researchers are planning. Tests on humans have shown great promise so far. An extra plus for the "treatment" is that it is anti-inflammatory. Such diseases as inflammatory bowel disease could be sent into remission.

It makes one wonder, however, why findings aren't applied generally much sooner. Leader of the project, Professor David Sinclair a specialist in the field, has been taking the red wine molecule resveratrol for ten years. Why isn't this available for use by the general public?
