kaskawulsh Glacier Stops Flowing into Slims River

▶The river Slims stops as a Glacier called Kaskawulsh changes direction of river water. kaskawulsh it Glacier to flowing on arctic Glacier kaskawulsh ◀ |
Most accept that global warming as scientifically proven, though some still will not accede. The north pole is getting smaller as glaciers melt due to higher temperatures. This can seen "on the ground" and from space.  ||| north arctic Stops at flowing in Glacier up kaskawulsh |
Kaskawulsh Glacier Slims River
Canada's Slims River in Yukon did receive inflow from the Kaskawulsh glacier. The weather got a lot hotter in 2016. This increased the melting rate of glaciers.  The flow has stopped because a deep opening formed in the glacier: dust storms sweep along the dry river bed that used to go north. It happened in four days. The glacier now feeds west into the Alsek River that turns south.

Researchers got a shock when they visited the area recently. They hadn't been there since 2013. Just before the river stopped flowing, the temperature increased - 4.3 degrees Centigrade higher than normal. Rivers and lakes downstream of Slims have been detrimentally affected. The ecosystem of the Alsek River has also changed because there is more water flowing. |.| not. |.|       vel news to   | ambitious up.

Archaeologists Say Fire Caused Tuberculosis

Fire caused tuberculosis according to new archaeological theory.
Evolution is very powerful. A change in climate leads to the survival of those who suit the new climate more adequately. A series of ice ages meant hairy people with narrow nasal passages (to warm the damaging cold air on it way into the lungs) passed on their genes. People living in central Africa remained in a warm climate, so they did not have to adapt.
Ancient man uses fire
A new premise is that the adoption of fire by early humans caused the emergence of tuberculosis. Apparently, many people crouching around a fire set the ideal conditions for TB to take hold. Just a minute though. Didn't Africans also cook meat on fires and kept near to it for warmth on cold nights? They certainly did. No, this new theory does not hold up.

It is assumed that TB is mainly a thing of cold climates.  More correctly, molecular archaeological evidence shows that TB began in Africa. Just how scientists reached the conclusion that humans passed it on to animals is beyond me, though. This is pie in the sky stuff, mere speculation.

Man has been using fire for at least 200,000 years. This is obvious. Scientists say TB appeared anywhere from 70,000 to 6,000 years ago. Such debate about the correct time of its occurrence means a lot of work has to be done before TB can be linked to fire.

First RNA Formed in Freshwater Pools Near a Volcano

Chemistry: Life began near an active volcano in a freshwater puddle.
Use your imagination and assume that life began in a puddle of fresh water near an active volcano. Molecules begin to "see" each other and unite into a larger whole. They become membranes, the envelopes of future life. Like a chicken's egg the membrane shell is the holding structure where chemicals are assembled for incubating lifeforms.
life began in a freshwater puddle near an active volcano
RNA was the first significant biological molecule. This has a basic form of repeating subunits. A simple molecule perhaps. but difficult for a primitive Earth to "create". Yet it came into existence. Membrane were required for chemicals to grow into RNA. The fatty, lipid molecules in membranes formed easily. Lipids assist the building of RNA, then it forms a protective coating. This was the first primitive cell.

As soon as some RNA replicated, lifeforms began to evolve becoming more complex. This occurred in fresh water which was heated and cooled probably close to a volcano. Cycles of changing temperatures caused chemicals to move around and become concentrated which was necessary for molecular synthesis to take place.

Earth's Change from Ice Ball to Warm Planet Was Sudden

A long, long time ago there was a supercontinent on the planet Earth called Rodinia. The continent broke up and gigantic rivers flowed across its landscape. Consequently, the chemistry of the sea was changed.
Iceage planet earth rodinia
High CO2 levels in the atmosphere fell. Heat was no longer trapped by the greenhouse effect. A very long iceage began with temperatures falling to -50°C. The iceage went on for a long time because the now white planet reflected the sun's energy.

Time stood still for rocks. Weathering did not occur. Volcanic activity began but it did not increase C02 by very much. Sea ice stopped sea water from taking up CO2 as it continued to reflect heat away.

Some explosive activity must have happened: the change from iceage to greenhouse was sudden. glassy hyaloclastite fell into the ocean releasing phosphorus. This released oxygen into the ocean and the atmosphere. Cataclysms destroy life so life can begin anew.

A Useful New Brew Tester: brewPal

Brewing goes high-tech. Well at least it does for small breweries. There is nothing worse than gulping down a cool stubbie and getting a flat, foul tasting experience. This seldom happens, of course, due to testing of the product in its creation.
Stubby beer from small Australian brewery
Invisible Sentinel has made a fantastic new product that solves most of the problems. A tiny device like a pregnancy tester called brewPal fits comfortably into your hand.  It analyses a beer's DNA and shows only one of two findings: either the beer is clear, or it has a spoiling infection.

When you exercise, lactic acid builds up in your body. This makes you feel tired. Excess lactic acid is also the cause of "off" beer. Unwanted bacteria produce the acid. Lactobacillus and Pediococcus are resistant to hops so they thrive in the brew. Oddly, some beers need these bacteria.

Culturing beer in the lab was time-consuming, especially in the hunt for Lactos and Pedis. It takes a week. Small companies can now test their beer with brewPal at the time of bottling to ensure a quality product. At last a company makes something really useful!
