Amputees Go on a Dove Hunt

You would think people who have lost limbs would have compassion. Sadly this is not the case. In Olney, Texas, those who have lost limbs meet to exchange stories about their lives and "shoot doves". I am not making this up. Apparently they get a kick out of hunting down the defenseless creatures.

The "club" was established in 1972 by Jack Northrup and Jack Bishop. Seventeen people showed up at the first meeting. Apparently, not all members actually shoot doves. Some attend to enjoy the talk about life and the gadgets amputees have made to improve their lives

The doves multiply to such an extent that they are in plague proportions in 40 states. No less than 400 million are believed to exist. The hunt is not wasteful: they make a good meal. Cooks have experimented by wrapping doves in Bacon then stuffing them with jalapenos. Now the word is out the club expects to get visitors from all over the world.

Drone Deliveries Are Out of This World

As if courier deliveries in Australia are not unreliable enough - they don't send out parcels and expect you to pick up from the depot - there is an attempt to deliver with no driver! Yes, the era of drone delivery is upon us it seems.

Next year Zookal will deliver text books from the University of Sydney directly to your mobile phone location. This is ludicrous. Can you imagine the congestion over cities with drones flying everywhere with no control. Why do we need air traffic controllers? They are essential to maintain safety of course.

Students are saying it will be good to receive university library books by drone. However, some scholarly books have more than 1,000 pages and are extremely heavy. Drones will have to be enormous to carry these. Crashes will be frequent with damage to buildings and those spinning blades will cause personal injury. Note, they will head to a phone and cannot see people.

Zookal assumes their concept will be accepted by Australia's Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). They may insist on a control system. This will cancel out any potential profit. I cannot believe that CASA can possible agree to flooding the lower sky with drones darting about all over the place.

At the moment only emergency services use drones, so there are very few drones flying in the same geographic zones. Let us hope common sense prevails. Domino's Pizza recently delivered a Pizza by drone. This was a test and it ended at that point. Collision avoidance systems in drone is unreliable at the moment. When faced with a large flat wall like on a skyscraper they usually crash into it.

The War Against Sweating Continues

We are all humans right? And being an animal we are inclined to sweat. This is a natural animal function. Indeed, humans have a lot of sweat glands that are designed to function on a naked body to stop the heat of the sun "cooking" the brain. Stop a natural function and you are asking for trouble.

Young women are ignoring this and are having botox injections under their arms to prevent odor from sweating. This is usually done just before the high school formal for girls to stay "fresh" in their fancy gowns. Apparently, the "treatment" last as long as nine months.

If you go to a gym and sweat, others tend to shun you as if you are not normal. An ad did indeed exploit such behavior by trying to sell liners that mop up the sweat. You would think a sports mad nation like Australia would ignore this trend and accept that physical activity makes one sweat, but Australian girls are "drowning" themselves in deodorant.

Like breaking wind, sweating is natural and healthy. Trying to make oneself into a perfectly neutral robot is not possible. In a world of active robots, odor from sweating would be an ideal way to show the demarcation between humans and robots. Heaven help us if some want to become actual robots.

Orange-Bellied Parrot About to Become Extinct

It's a tough time for the orange-bellie. This species of parrot is about to become extinct. It is estimated to have five years left to live. A few years ago there were 70 pairs. Now only 50 birds remain. The last species of bird to go extinct in Australia ceased its existence 70 years ago.

For the most part, people don't seem to care. However, there are more close to extinction. A fight ensues to keep the orange-bellie alive. In 1984 the Orange-Bellied Parrot (OBP) Recovery Team was created to monitor and protect the bird. A protected breeding program was established in south-west Tasmania. Fifteen years of drought has seen the birds' supply of seeds dwindle to almost nothing. Water has been allocated for irrigation and piped away from the region.

A last throw of the dice involves catching 10 pairs then breeding them in a caged area. This kind of action is unusual. It would be expected that eggs be taken from nests of wild birds, with hatching done in an incubator then hand feeding. This way more eggs would be laid when the initial eggs are taken away.

Once wild birds are taken from the wild they will always be domesticated. Learning from older birds ends.  There is no way that knowledge of feeding grounds can be passed on.

Does Tony Abbot Hold the Climate Change Faith?

Now don't get me wrong here! Tony Abbot has shown himself to be a good prime Minister. He has kept his known temper under wraps. Whether this will last we don't know yet. Keeping control of information about new boat arrivals will probably not work for much longer. The press have a habit of "getting ahead" of events. Reporters will find out somehow and release the knowledge to everyone.

The greatest problem lies in the area of climate change. Everyone has the latest news and info at hand today. The north and south poles are decreasing in size and that is enough in itself to accept that climate change is caused by human activity. Furthermore, animal species are moving into new regions as oceans warm up.

Though Tony Abbot admits somewhat reluctantly that climate change is due to industrialization, one cannot be sure if he genuinely believes this. He has surrounded himself with climate change skeptics. Many would not accept that a war was going on until they saw a tank come over the hill.

None are so blind than those who will not see. Nothing will change a skeptic. Indeed, the flat earth society still exists despite the weight of science against it. The most skeptical of all in Tony Abbott's inner circle is Maurice Newman, who is paranoid about CSIRO and the Bureau of Meteorology of conspiring with blatant lies to substantiate there "false" claims.

It is okay for Prime Minister Tony Abbott to be pro-business. After all this is expected of a right wing political Party, which the Liberal Party is in Australia. Perhaps Australia shouldn't do anything until other countries act on climate change. This could be the new high moral ground. But chasing a fact as being the cause and vice versa led to the demise of the Labor party. Listening to the majority of voters is important to politicians particularly if they hope to survive elections.
