The Chestnut-Crowned Babbler Bird Uses Sentences

It seems that bird calls evolve like human language. Research on the chestnut-crowned babbler shows the cooperative bird is able to change the order of sounds to make new "sentences" with different meanings. The babbler does not sing like other birds. It makes a series of unique sounds.
The chestnut-crowned babbler bird uses sentences
Analysis shows that the bird is communicating in different ways by stringing sounds together. It has two main categories of calls A and B. If flying, only AB calls are made. In the nest with young birds BAB calls predominate.

When different calls were played back, AB calls initiated flight in the birds that heard it and BAB sounds caused them to go the nest. These "sentences" were definitely perceived as unique instructions. Even when sound prompt elements were changed for the sentences the birds could still tell the difference.

This is the first time a vocabulary type structure in communication has been observe in any animal other than human. The first sound in The A and B structure determines what the overall meaning is, This is similar to human words, for example like the C in CAT (when AT can be used multiple times in any human sentence). It would be pertinent to assume that language in humans began with a very simple system as in these birds.

Nexus 7 Review - Poor, Do Not Buy!

You have to be careful buying new tech products. There is a belief out there that a new version is always better than the old one. This is not always the case. Take for instance the new Nexus 7. A lot has been written about this with some rave reviews.

I don't know what some of these reviewers are on, but they certainly are not seeing things clearly - some bias is there. The widely held view that buying the latest Nexus 7 is the road to Nirvana is wrong. If you have another Android device with the same login you will not get an automatic restore. It just does not work because Google picks up the two Android devices. A trip into the Play Store will be necessary. Click on the icon in the top left and "My Apps" will be shown. You have to click "All" to see the apps you have paid for.

Re-installing each one in turn is the requirement and don't think all your data is automatically backed up. You discover that you should have backed up the data for each app separately before you dumped the perfectly good older version. A thing that you will regret.

The only virtue of the new Nexus 7 is that it is thinner. That sums it up. Despite having stereo speakers one at each end it does not cut the mustard. What a stupid idea having stereo on such a small device! Sound quality is very poor indeed. It really is disgraceful. If you plug it into a hi-fi you have to turn the volume up to number 22. This compares with 10 using the old version of Nexus 7.

Another odd thing is the hi-fi volume can be turned to maximum and it doesn't get louder - it gets more distorted. The old Nexus had beautiful base and full hi-fi volume could not be set as it was too loud. There is just a pinging "sort of" base with the new one. It is an odd sound. You cannot enjoy listening to music, podcasts only I would say. Even then there is only treble, no base at all from the two speakers. There was some base on the older version playing on its own.

A mystery to me is that all the BBC apps have disappeared from the Play Store. Has Google had a falling out with them or something. This sudden parting seems strange.

Don't be reckless and buy the new Nexus 7. It is a waste of money. No wonder the price has fallen. Many customers would return it if they kept the receipt. Oh, how I miss my old Nexus that unfortunately was dropped and became stuck in the "ON" position. Google picked that up and would not do an automatic install.  Buying online may be easy, but it is risky.  I should have gone to a store and taken it for a test drive.  You do learn something every day.

MOZILLA FIREFOX 14 WILL NOT UPDATE TO FIREFOX 15 IN WINDOWS 7, won't, can't, cannot

MOZILLA FIREFOX 14 WILL NOT UPDATE TO FIREFOX 15 IN WINDOWS 7

Firefox programmers are just as useless as those at Microsoft Internet Explorer.  They drink coffee all day and then go home to play with their hardware.

They are paid to do a job then do something else, wasting their work hours away.  You would not believe that programmers must be the most absent minded people in the world.  They concentrate on putting useless complex things into software that users just will not use, but they forget to cover the basics.

There is a reason why Firefox 14 will not update to Firefox 15.  Firefox 14 is installed in a Mozilla Firefox folder in the C: drive Programs Files folder in Windows 7 64bit.  Oddly, Firefox 15 is installed in C:\users\name\AppData\local\Mozilla folder in Windows 7 32bit and in the 64bit.  You are given no option to change it.

To see the AppData folder go to the "name" folder from "Users" in Explorer.  Click "Organize".  Click "Folder and search options".  Click the "View" tab.   Then click the little circle to the left of "Show hidden files, folders and drives".

You will need to access this folder later.

UPGRADING TO MOZILLA FIREFOX 15

Forget  about Firefox 14 in the program folder for the moment.  Download a fresh copy of Mozilla Firfox 15 and install it.  Mozilla will just leave the old Firefox 14 where it is so you can drag out a fresh shortcut link from the exe file onto your desktop and run both versions.  Aren't Firefox programmers clever.  Don't tell them - they haven't noticed it yet!

Run Firefox 15 from the start menu or from the new link it "hopefully' put on your desktop.  From the word GO you will get a warning band across the top of the page in the browser when you encounter a website with background sound.  You will probably get a message telling you that you need to install Quicktime.  After you install it you will get the warning again and again.  You may get something else - a warning telling you that Quicktime has malfunctioned.  Every time you go to a website with sound you will get the same warning.  With no sound from Firefox 15 you go to Google, search and find this blog.

It is not a Quicktime problem!

SOLUTION

You can go to "Add-ons" and not see Windows Media Player there.  Download Firefox WMP Plugin from here.  You will probably still not get any sound.

Open this folder: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
(the old Firefox 14 folder)

In another window open this folder:
C:\Users\name\AppData\Local\Mozilla Firefox.
Be careful because it may be in a sub,sub folder like,
C:\Users\name\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox.

Copy the "Plugins" folder from Firefox 14 to the folder of Firefox 15.

THE IDIOTS HAVE NOT PROVIDED A PLUGINS FOLDER IN FIREFOX 15.  HOW COULD THEY POSSIBLE FORGET???

You will now have sound in Firefox 15.  If you have already uninstalled Firefox 14 you can get the files in the Plugins folder from here
