Bullet Train for Australia - Not Yet!

Australia has always wanted a high speed train. The problem is there are great distances to travel and a complete rebuild of tracks will have to be done.  Like roads in Australia there is not the money to put down a decent foundation for them like they do in Europe where people live close together.

If it was to be done the first location would be from Melbourne to Sydney.  That is where most choose to travel for vacation and business.  Governments of both political persuasions have set up inquiries then rejected the findings in the past.

Some are saying that with the economic downturn investment in a bullet train would create jobs.  The real problem is who is going to pay for it?' Victoria and NSW say that the federal government should pay.  A joint investment program will be needed, however.

Australia Makes Quantum Computer Chip Breakthrough -Twice!

Australian scientists are still working feverishly toward producing a quantum computer. Two kinds of qubits, the building clocks of a quantum computer, have been made. Silicon is the base material which is the normal chip mineral.

Below the silicon base, atoms are the working parts. They are the storage medium. More data can be manipulated than in traditional computers. The error rate for quantum computers has been dramatically reduced.

Because two teams have made different chips and working computers, it means major production is imminent. Silicon is plentiful and relatively cheap so cost is not a major problem.  There will be a rush to make a working computer and mass produce it.

The two systems are different. One uses an embedded phosphorus atom, the other an artificial atom. The Dzurak chip can be made in existing factories as it imitates normal transistors. Both chips can hold memory for 30 seconds which is sufficient to do complex work. Obviously one system will be adopted. Which chip will it be?

New Technology Not for Everyone

Playing around with new tech devices and writing reviews full of praise is all well and good, but many people in all countries are still using dial-up modems. This brave new world is not available to them.

Even for users in built up areas where ADSL2 is available, 200GB is never going to be enough to watch streaming high-definition movies. Magic dongles are wonderful for those on the main line. However, some will never be connected to this line.

Netflix is being accused of using up to half of all bandwidth. This state of affairs cannot continue. The Internet will ultimately slow down. It is not a bottomless pit. There are limits.

Third world countries will never put fiber in for the majority. Capital cities in all countries will probably get very fast Internet. Even in suburbs though fast speeds will never be seen.

Dark Matter Theory Is Questioned

Dark matter holds the universe together right?  Well, the theory of dark matter may be widely believed, but there isn't much of it in our part of the universe.  The research team puts forward its findings.  Believers question the accuracy of what they have found.

This isn't a question of how much is out there.  The team found no dark matter at all.  The dark matter theory holds that dark matter should be plentiful, everywhere.  As much as 85 per cent of everything should be dark matter.  The sun should be pulled around with dark matter.  Unfortunately, scientists cannot find it.

Dark matter theory is based on the premise that stars trapped in a gravitational well light years away travel at a fixed speed.  This, with the shape of the well allows a calculation to be made.  Star counts give the amount of ordinary matter.  subtracting this from the mass determined from the calculation gives the amount of dark matter.

The team found that the dark matter theory was questionable.  The speed of the stars did not need dark matter to explain it.
