Only 10 Percent of Human Genes are Researched

Much is said about advances in gene research. Unfortunately, most is just a rehash of old stuff. For a decade we have been going nowhere. Only 10 percent of human genes are studied. The other 10 percent are thrown in the too hard basket. The 90 percent determine how we look, our intelligence, health and wellbeing.

Dingo DNA Clarifies Dog Domestication

The champ of the World's Most Interesting Genome Competition wasn't even human. It was mutt! Sandy is a 100 percent pure bred dingo. The subject animal had to beat a bombardier beetle, Temple Pitviper snake, pink pigeon and a sea slug.   |.| sandy on dna do dingo is Domestication of dogs dna nt sandy clarifies |.|
SDingo called Sandy
DNA of the pooch was analyzed by Professor Bill Ballard head of a group from the University of Arizona and NSW's universities. The team researched the DNA of a Dingo for determining the genes for domestication. The researchers benefitted from a cash prize for the win: the Pacific Biosciences SMRT Grant. They will spend this to test a portion of the premises recommended by Charles Darwin.   |_| sandy as dingo it go Domestication in sandy dingo dog dna |_| |_| travel news stories genes |_|

It it easy to acknowledge Darwin's premise that dogs were specifically reproduced by Man to train them to be docile with humans. Having a manageable thoroughbred dingo was an extraordinary chance to break understand how selection took place. Contrasting DNA qualities of trained pooches and Sandy will highlight sequences of genes for conduct and personality. |_| dog dogs domestic genetic clarifies or Domestication charles darwin. |_|

The numbers of wild Canis lupus is diminishing: pet dogs frequently leave the cars of families exploring the outback to breed with pure bloods. Giving them a species name is not logical in my view. Considering they can readily mate with canines and have fertile young. The offspring are not "mules", a necessary requirement for naming.

GM Not for Food Okay for Health

Genetic modification is favored in health but not for food.
Convincing people to eat genetically modified food still has a long way to go to gain majority acceptance. Yet, just about everyone is in favor of using gene technology to treat health problems. This is a strange anomaly. Gene manipulation of any kind will change the world we live in. Once a change has been made and it spreads through the environment it is there forever.
The case against genetically modified crops, GMCs
Drug companies admit they have lost the war in Europe. There is no way that GM food will ever be accepted there. It is largely an emotional decision, not scientifically based. Possibly, in the near future, Europe will ban DNA experimentation in health as well. This will be counter-productive. If money is invested in nations that welcome gene science then the environment will change anyway because we all live in the same world.

There is a major problem looming, however, on the real future of genetically modified crops. To be profitable farmers must use Monsanto's Roundup. This is losing its effectiveness, particularly in Western Australia which has recently relaxed laws restricting GMCs. The cart isn't much use without the horse.  Even crops modified to be resistant against glyphosate could become weeds in the future.  Unless a new effective herbicide is developed soon the industry will not attract investors - potential profit drives everything.

Frankenstein Genetically Modified Organisms

The possibility of scientists creating a Frankenstein monster in genetic experiments is real. It could happen. Something that runs roughshod over human chemical barriers can be given life.
Genetically modified organism GMO pig fish
The reality of genetically modified crops "contaminating" adjacent farms and ridiculous monetary claims by Monsanto are common. Everything living does affect everything else. There are no hard barriers keeping them in. A great frontier is wide open to them. An "off-switch" is badly needed.

Modified insects to fight pests and disease have already been released. There is a way to reduce the danger. Create a genetic code that is able to force a genetically modified organism to commit suicide. This works for insects but not so well for GM bacteria. Denying bacteria an essential element is problematic. There are two ways to destroy such bacteria.

The first involves the creation of a synthetic extra amino acid in proteins. GM bacteria are created that need this 21st amino acid. However, it can be removed and the GMO dies.

Second, like the method just explained above, E. coli is the protein carrier. It becomes active in the presence of arabinose, a sugar. When it detects arabinose it goes on the rampage killing the main GMO.

We could be heading down a rocky path in the future. It should be noted that we are using GMOs to fight GMOs. What stops the killing organism from running riot on its own? The fear is real. Our Brave New World is dangerous.

More Meat and Milk from Cloned Cows

The Pollard farm looks like an ordinary farm but there is something that makes it unique. Many cows there are identical. Indeed, 20 are clones. They are copies of the most productive animals around. It must be noted, however, that the clones real age is their actual age plus the age of the animal they were cloned from. This is the problem with cloning, but, in breeding animals that give more meat and milk there has been no major obstacles.

Less feed is required per pound of meat or liter of milk. Clones also reproduce quicker with reduced complications. This is good for the environment: less fertilizer and diesel is used.

There are issues with genetic tampering of animals and crops. Scientists are saying that despite decades of work no genetically modified crop has yet been adopted worldwide. Because only people from high-income countries eat meat, cloning of cows will not help world hunger.

The real challenge with cloning of cows is the high cost - $15,000 per animal. So meat from them will also be expensive. Genetically modified crops also have the same problem. Thus, cost is the main persisting barrier to acceptance of GM products.
