Elephants Play Football

Not only humans enjoy a game of soccer. Elephants have a good time playing it too. Despite their size they are very fast and agile.

The fifth annual Chitwan festival in Nepal organized a soccer match for elephants in the region. Competition was rough with masters and elephants playing hard. The Wai Wai noodles team won the event. They dominated the final against the Hotel Association winning 3-0.

Riders sit on the backs of elephants while the animals really kick the ball around. An international elephant race has been included to bring more people (and elephants) to the festival.

Snakes Are Tough

Snakes are tougher than you may think. A women was driving around in her car which was making strange noises. Mechanics had no hope of finding the problem because the issue wasn't with the car's mechanicals. The cause lay in the air-conditioning system.

Kit Carson (yes real name) had a look at the rotor on the air-conditioning. To his horror a snake threatened to attack him. The snake had been entangled around the rotor of the air-conditioner. It must had been spinning around like "a bloody washing machine", says Kit.

The snake has been released to live the rest of its life in less exciting circumstances, though it will be 5 cms shorter - its tail was smashed around a bit.

Elephants and Mammoths Have Much the Same DNA

Elephants aren't so different from woolly mammoths. DNA samples taken from mammoth hair shows they are much alike. Furthermore, there are indications that the mammoth population was so low toward the end that inbreeding took place.

If the unique mammoth genome can be isolated it can be inserted into elephant DNA to produce a woolly mammoth. It has also been found that differentiation between mammoth was only minor, so that a disease could have easily wiped them out.

Mammoth are more closely related to elephants than chimpanzees are to humans, which is about 99 percent. Evidence shows that there were two groups of mammoth. One group died out 45,000 years ago, the other 10,000 years ago.
