Australia Bans Swearing

Swearing is part of Australian culture. Indeed, to be accepted as truly Australian, you have to swear a lot. So it is with great surprise to me that Australia is bringing in a swearing ban!

The furore has been caused by the airing of Gordan Ramsey's programs on televisions. In 40 minutes he did say the "f" word more than 80 times. This may be excessive. But if one goes into a public bar, particularly when there are men who have done a hard day's grueling labor, such as shearers, the "f" word will be expressed a lot.

The Australian Governments made recommendations to Australian television networks advising them to review the way they set program guidelines "to stop" coarse language. Just how they are going to do this is a mystery considering Ramsey's programs are very popular, swearing or not.

It is said there is a culture of crudeness. Well, This is Australia and this is part of Australian culture.

Robot Dog to Monitor Dieters

Be careful, the "dog" is watching! A robot dog has been made that watches your food intake and and extols the virtues of eating a good diet.

If you have been good, the dog will jump up and down with joy. It will glow with flashing lights, wag its tail and play a cheerful song.

On the other hand, if you have been naughty and have overeaten it will behave in a sorrowful way, moving slowly and play boring music.

A person can trick the robot dog, however, because data has to be provided by the subject. Will over eaters be honest? Information from a pedometer and bathroom scales will give the dog a bit of an edge on finding out if you are doing the right thing.

It is believed that the concept will be successful. Research has shown that dieters do better if they have a companion to monitor their progress.

Music Heals - But Does it?

It has been said that music is good for you and assists the healing process. Apparently, it's cheaper to give patients music than administer medication. Less sleep medication is required.

Mozart's piano sonatas have been found to be the best "treatment". People listening to this music had decreased stress hormones and increased growth hormones. Researchers even go so far as to say "If patients could be exposed to music in the ICU … they would survive more often".

Now here is the "hit" - I don't like Mozart's music. And I doubt if being forced to listen to it would lessen stress or raise growth hormones in my case.

A lot of researchers actually select their subjects for projects without even knowing it. For example, only those who like such music would participate in the first place.

Reptiles and Other Animals Will Find Global Warming Difficult

Crocodiles will find it difficult to survive if the world continues to heat up. When temperatures rise offspring are all female. The few males that are born will be really busy!

This rule applies to virtually all reptiles including alligators, turtles, lizards, etc.

It has also been found that as the world warms, animals and insects move to higher latitudes on mountains. Indeed, species living in a niche on mountain tops have already become very rare and in some cases extinct.

People Claim Stress Causes Cancer

Perhaps researchers have given up on finding a cure for cancer. The disease is now being blamed on stress and bad luck. This is despite the real cause being smoking and diet.

It seems people will not own up to causative factors such as behavior and lifestyle. Half of bowel and breast cancer patients said stress and worry led to their condition. Some said a virus, germ or their personality was a factor.

Hardly anyone admitted that heavy smoking leads to cancer.
