Sanctions Do Not Hurt Burma and North Korea
Sanctions do not work on countries such as Burma and North Korea. This is a fact. Yet members of the United Nations continue to call for sanctions. All this form of punishment does is hurt the innocent. Both countries are controlled by dictatorships, so ordinary people have to suffer the consequences of these regimes.
Don't believe for a moment that those who run the dictatorships miss out on luxuries - they don't! The leaders are driven around in fancy cars, eat the best food and have their central heating/air conditioning on full blast without a care in the world.
Burma (Myanmar) has experienced sanctions for more than ten years. The governing elite is as powerful as ever. It does what it likes with the opposition - locking her up when it feel like it and trying her on trumped-up charges.
The country just doesn't bother trading internationally. It just deals with a handful of other countries. China. Thailand, India and Singapore do not bother with sanctions and benefit by getting in there and helping themselves to cheap timber, gas and precious gems.
Citizens of Burma and North Korea will remain poor partly due to sanctions being in place. The leaders benefit from the little international trade they have. They don't give a damn about hungry people. The leaders have millions while their people have pennies.
