Search Is on for Old Australian Newspapers

The search is on for Australian history. If anything happened a century ago the local newspaper would report it. But many newspaper businesses only kept hard-copy for twenty or so years. So now the word has gone out - look under your floor coverings, in the old shed or in the attic and look at the dates on the newspapers that are found. You may find a gem of an article about an event in Australian history.

For example, copies of the Spring Creek Advertiser and Rodney Standard have turned up in pristine condition: tinged a light brown color but the print is clearly legible. The editions found were sold in the years 1868 and 1869.

Stories of what actually happened were usually described in great detail because photographs were not used in Australian newspapers until 1887.

Missing publications include the bound volume for 1947 of the Euroa Gazette. This newspaper is also searching for the 3 June 1959 and the 24 April 1984 editions. So some lost information is quite recent.

Those who are really interested in the lost editions should go to,
People can also "get on the bandwagon" and use the flyers and posters at, http://www.nla.gov.au/media/anplan/index.html.
